Mods to fit BBC in 3rd gen
![]()
Below is a list of the modifications I had to do to fit the 427 and T400 into the 88 Camaro
Use small block motor mounts on the frame side. Use the forward mounting hole locations on the cross member.
Put slots in front of cross member to access nuts on the motor mount bolts.
Use standard BBC engine side mounts.
Cut up and weld cross member (pass side) for header pipe clearance. (Hooker Super Competition for BBC in third gen p/n 520-2226 Jegs) These dump under the rocker panels on the side of the car.
Cut up & weld front subframe at the at the fire wall for header collector clearance.
Trim bottom of inner fender well for collector clearance.
Pound up floor boards for collector, muffler and exhaust clearance
Make clearance on pass side frame rail for header pipes
Modify tunnel on pass side for scatter shield clearance. The T400 alone fits.
Trim rear part of a-arms and a-arm mounting brackets (both sides) for header clearance
Reroute front brake lines inside frame rails to keep away from the headers
Cut up fire wall for HEI distributer clearance
Must run electric fans hood clearance
Fabricated upper and lower radiator mounts
With a low rise intake manifold and a short air cleaner (2") it could fit under the hood
Tall valve covers are going to hit the windshield wiper motor. Not sure how to fix this yet.
Hurst cross member mounting kit for T400 tranny and stock torque arm mounting
